The real culprit turned out to be the slide-type HI/LOW switch.
The wiring for that moving part is supposed to fit inside the body,
but the wiring was pulling tight and getting caught in the back, leaving it stuck on HI.
Once you know what caused it, you’re not afraid of future problems.
