Chego Ya (headquarters in Shinagawa Ward, Tokyo), a Korean restaurant known as a popular establishment featured on television cooking shows, has been referred for prosecution by the Metropolitan Police Department on the 12th. The company and its male CEO (51) are suspected of violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (facilitating illegal employment) and other charges. The CEO is reportedly admitting to the allegations.
According to an investigation by the Organized Crime Countermeasures Division and others, Chego Ya hired two Korean men and women in unlawful status as employees and had them work at its directly operated store in Shibuya 3-chome, Minato Ward, from May 7 through October 15. In October, the Metropolitan Police and Tokyo Immigration Bureau conducted a joint crackdown on Chego Ya, arresting a total of eight Korean and Chinese nationals, including the two men and women, on suspicion of violating the Immigration Control and Refugee Recognition Act (unlawful residence, etc.).
Chego Ya operates 26 franchised locations nationwide, centered in the Kanto region, with outlets in Fukui, Kokura and elsewhere. The chain’s selling point is “open year-round.” According to a private credit research agency, the company has approximately 65 employees and annual sales of around 600 million yen.
The company stated, “We sincerely apologize. We want to strengthen our checking procedures to prevent this from happening again.”
