Well then, today I’m heading to the Tokyo Metropolitan Teien Art Museum…
They’re running an exhibition called The World of Perfume Bottles.
I’m not particularly interested in perfume itself, but rather in the sculptural forms on display.
It’s close to JR Meguro, so it’s within walking distance.
Photography is prohibited, which is a bit of a shame,
but the collection ranges from ancient pieces dating to 2972–2647 BCE from the Early Dynastic Period all the way to 21st-century items.
Even though it’s a weekday, there were quite a few people!
The building was originally constructed in 1933 (Showa 8) as the Asaka no Miya residence,
and it’s extremely modern and substantial—really cool as a structure!
The sunlight comes in beautifully, and it’s nice and warm.
Things like “dying flowers”…
I wonder if perfume names are chosen to be evocative precisely because scent is so subjective?
