I’m going to digress a bit here. I’ve always thought that fasteners would be far better than what we have, but time has passed and here we are.
I happen to have a unit on hand, so let me test it out.
The mounting pitch is 28 mm—an awkward dimension. Ideally, I’d prefer to do it without machining the main body, which would be safer for the work and would also allow us to return to the standard setup. In testing, I changed the dimensions using a notch and a punch.
Right: rivet pinched in the cowl; left: rivet from the back. The left is definitely better.
It feels a bit weak, or maybe just disappointing. Given the extra machining involved, I have to reject this approach.
The top side is fine as is, but next I’d like to switch the bottom side to fasteners too—wouldn’t you?
