In the midst of the custom boom, when you think of a striking meter, it’s the STACK ST8130.
I have this meter installed on my GS1000S.
The design is fantastic! The build quality… well…
It’s originally for cars, you see.
For units stored outdoors, honestly, this meter is pretty harsh.
In a world where fully digital displays have become standard,
don’t you think the analog needle plus blocky digital display era feels incredibly cool?
Even now, this STACK ST8130 can be easily obtained from Marine UK.
As for domestic distributors, SARD is well known.
Looking at the sales status of various sensors, I see a lot of “discontinued” notices.
I wonder if demand has just dropped… I found myself thinking wistfully.
This ST8130 is extremely beautiful, and when installed on a motorcycle, it offers excellent visibility—truly a wonderful meter.
However, since it’s originally for cars, you have to overcome various obstacles.
First, it’s expensive.
You need to be prepared for the possibility of damage from a crash or accident.
Speed sensors and oil temperature sensors are also relatively pricey.
It’s not waterproof.
Since it’s for cars, it’s basically not waterproof. The meter has a small silica gel packet built inside—you can hear it rustling.
If the condition is poor, the glass can become cloudy. You might need to remove the glass, clean it, and apply a coating agent. Well, as long as you don’t use it excessively or store it poorly, you should be fine.
The dedicated harness is robust.
Robust sounds good, but to put it negatively, it’s thick and stiff. Routing it on a motorcycle takes some effort. If you use just the meter-side metal connector (metal connector/metal connector) and rewire it, it becomes very simple. It’s mostly just signal wires.
I’ve searched quite a bit for this metal connector but haven’t found an identical one yet.
If anyone knows where to find one, please tell me.
So it’s a situation where it costs a fair amount, isn’t waterproof, and has harness routing issues. I can understand why the ST700SR and similar models are popular—they offer good specs at a reasonable price.
STACK offers manuals available for download. The manual includes wiring diagrams, which is really helpful.
There are some hardcore enthusiasts out there who are even displaying gear position indicators while patrolling around…
I’ve written about this meter, but honestly, I can’t really recommend installing aftermarket meters.
The reason is that between the meter itself, installation labor, and fabricating brackets, it’ll take a serious bite out of your wallet. You really need a strong attachment to the idea to take that step. Performance-wise, nothing changes anyway.
