This is the Makita Disc Grinder 18V GA418D♪
At our shop, this disc grinder with “low” frequency of useis something we can’t do without in many situations.
When I learned about this disc grinder, I was somewhat surprised by its mechanisms
the “brake” and “paddle switch”—just these features alone significantly enhance its range of applications and safety, don’t you think?
Being cordless reduces hassle, and being able to stand the grinder upright is another nice feature.
You can adjust the speed from 1 to 5.
That alone makes quite a difference. There are many situations where you don’t need such high RPM.
High RPM means sparks and dust fly farther, so adjusting the RPM according to the situation is important.
It seems the RPM changes even in between settings.
Fuzzy (is that an outdated term?) adjustments might also be possible.
The “paddle switch” and “brake”are excellent.
With the “paddle switch” you can turn it ON/OFFwith one hand.
With conventional grindersyou had to go “heave-ho click!”andturn OFFthe switch, right?
The “brake”electrically stops the rotation.
Unlike old grindersthere’s barely any “aftertone”.
That “whirrrrrr” sound after turning OFF is minimal—you can set it down right away.
Only at speed 5“High Speed Mode” and “Torque Mode”switch depending on the situation.
When the circle disappearsit’s in “High Speed Mode”
and when the dot lights upit’s in “Torque Mode”
or so I’m told. I don’t really look at these things while working, so I can’t tell…
When the disc gets caught and rotation drops suddenly, a feature called ATF automatically turns it OFF. I thought this significantly improves safety.
A button press locks the disc during changes. The cover has a one-touch lock.
In recent years, there’s a one-touch disc change system called “XLOCK”.
Some models have adopted it, but since I have existing discs and XLOCK is still expensive, I couldn’t justify the purchase (；∀；)
The situations where I use a disc grinder are
・Grinding chain pins
・When I need to remove a lot of material
・Rough grinding, etc.
I basically hate this work because it’s so dusty.
I mainly use cutting wheels, grinding stones, sandpaper, and wire wheels.
There are Scotch-Brite-like products available recently, so I wonder if they might be convenient if I tried them.
After all, going cordless is really great (‘ω’)ノ
