This year’s weather has been relentlessly rainy, and both the workshop and living spaces are plagued by moisture and the threat of mold. Within Chiba Prefecture alone, we’ve been hit by concentrated downpours on August 13, heavy rain on September 6, and the decisive blow—Typhoon No. 25 from September 20 to 22—leaving barely a moment to catch our breath between disaster-level weather events. Looking back, there have been almost no clear, pleasant days, and we’ve even been robbed of opportunities to ride our beloved bikes.
What we frequently hear from news coverage and real footage of disaster sites is the phrase, “I never thought I’d actually be affected by a disaster.” However, for motorcycle riders who constantly anticipate unexpected troubles and navigate hazards while riding, that crisis awareness and risk management sense should naturally be quite sharp.
So this time, I’d like to introduce to you riders who are naturally sensitive to risk the “genuinely practical emergency gear” that I’ve been carefully assembling through trial and error.

The fatal weakness of tabletop lanterns: When you “place” them on a table or floor, the light source ends up at eye level, and while it’s dazzling to look at directly, it creates large shadows in the corners of the room and makes the interior feel dim.

Try turning off the lights at night and see for yourself
You’ll really get a sense of it when you turn off the lights at night. It’s quite inconvenient… When I was in Tokyo, I almost never experienced a blackout. Even here in Chiba now, it’s only happened a couple of times, but it’s really inconvenient at night. In the first place, you probably don’t have any overhead lights lying around. So I went searching for a lantern that would be easy to use.
When imagining my daily use during a blackout, I felt this struck the best balance and was the ultimate choice. I purchased two colors—gray and olive. If you buy multiple of the same color, you can’t tell them apart…
I think every household should have at least two.
The reel attachment point uses neodymium magnets for quick attachment and detachment. The neodymium magnets are incredibly strong, so the reel won’t come off just from pushing down on it.
Picture this: you’re indoors during a blackout and need to use the bathroom. You simply detach this lantern and take it with you, then reattach it to the reel when you return. If you’re alone, this is probably how you’d use it.
The automatic retractable reel is brilliant.
You can stop it at any point while lowering it, and you can even reel it back up partway. It’s like an air hose reel if you can picture that. The ability to adjust the hanging height to your preference is excellent.
It works anywhere, which is wonderful. Plus, most people probably don’t own this type of hanging light fixture. You can’t illuminate a wide area unless the light comes from above, so during a blackout most people would really struggle.
It has a carabiner, so you can hang it anywhere without worrying about the location or safety.
The shade is made of silicone. Two patterns are included, and the ambiance improves.
Plain and wave patterns come included. I use the plain one because it’s easier to clean.
Being able to change the ambiance in your daily use is excellent.
App control forON/OFF, brightness adjustment, and battery level
Even if you install it high up during a blackout, you can easily turn it on/off and adjust it via the app. Plus, you can check the battery level in real time, which is great. Runtime (maximum brightness) – 7 hours / (minimum brightness) – 113 hours This runtime is truly a lifesaver. You won’t use it continuously for 24 hours, so it’ll easily last several days. No matter how bright it is, if the runtime is short, it’s not worth it.
It’s SUS304, so the material is a bit wasteful, but I made it when I had a chance. The structure is simple, so it was easy to make.
I made the tip hook-shaped for efficient hanging. The ceiling mount uses M5 wood screws for attachment.
It’s hard to find hooks or brackets with good design and the exact length and shape you want, isn’t it? If you can make it yourself, I think it’s better to just go ahead and make it (*´ω｀*)
When installed, it looks clean and doesn’t compromise the log house design.

This is how bright it is with just this light. To the naked eye it’s a bit darker. That said, it’s plenty bright for everyday use.
