I’m not a believer in “bigger is better.”
The rule “big is big, small is small” applies to all things, doesn’t it?
So I switched my Makita split motor from 18V to 40Vmax.
I won’t use 18V anymore….
The 18V isn’t as light as you’d think and lacks power and torque *Of course, that’s compared to 40Vmax…
If your budget allows, I’d recommend 40Vmax!

Actually, the 40Vmax compared to 18V is “neither heavier nor larger”
Front is 18V, back is 40Vmax
The motor section is just a bit bulkier, and there’s no major difference in size.
The motor is thicker and taller, but “the difference is only 1.3kg”
1.3kg is quite a bit of weight.
However, because the rear is heavier, it’s easier to balance with the weight of the attachment section I feel.
Especially when using trimmer attachments, the balance is much better than 18V it seems.
More options with 40Vmax
When you line them up, you can see that the 18V is indeed the more convenient model.
18V has “ON/OFF and 1 or 2 ”
40Vmax has “ON/OFF, 1/2/3, reverse rotation ”
When you use it, the difference is very significant, or rather it’s something you can’t do without
When vines or discarded rope-like things get tangled, reverse rotation is very convenient.
What you can tell from the specs
The overall length is about the same, just slightly heavier.
The 40Vmax also seems to have better battery life.

Battery changes are frequent
Can’t apply much load (if you push it, it stops/you run into situations where it won’t cut or trim)

Those in the grass cutting field find 40Vmax very convenient to use~
