Oil-cooled GSX-R1100M with different looks and character by year: carburettor maintenance, step area polishing, D-UNIT+ installation

Back in the day? (just a vague impression)
The MN model seemed to be the most popular GSX-R1100 by far.

Next came the early GHJ models (J was surprisingly popular too).

And last were the K and L models, or so it seemed.
The MN is the final, one-of-a-kind single-valve, single-rocker design with all its harsh demands.
With no cam, keeping it alive long-term gets pretty complicated.

But I bet you could swap pretty much all the upper fairing and bodywork, right?
I really do think Suzuki is something special.

Started taking it apart early in the morning.
A big polishing operation to clean things up. Because style starts from the feet, as they say.

Working in the shop today so nothing flies around.

Safety first! Gloves, face mask, respirator, long sleeves!
As you get older, you learn that even small shortcuts can lead to serious trouble.

Time passes… and the polishing and painting are complete!

That’s how it turned out.

As always, we don’t apply clear coat. This polishing resists corrosion well, and even if we did spray clear, it would eventually degrade anyway. So the most efficient approach at this point is to re-polish whenever you want it looking sharp again.

Changed the engine oil and filter.

About that speedometer noise—took it apart, cleaned it, and lubricated it.
The meter bulb was about done, so we switched it to LED.

That’s how smooth it runs now.

And that’s the completion!
