I’ll disassemble it. I start by loosening the cylinder rod fixing bolt. Sometimes people strip it, but I’ve never had that happen. I think it’s more effective to loosen it while everything is under tension. I wouldn’t recommend using an impact wrench for this.
Sorry the rocker cover is dirty. It’s not actually that dirty though. I think the metal seating is good.
Generally speaking, metal doesn’t turn black unless it’s in heavy contact. While oil degradation plays a role, most of it is metal debris.
No runout or bending—that’s reassuring. I measure like this, but if the base is flimsy, the measurement won’t be accurate.
The weight of your hand can distort the base, and the way you spin it affects the reading too, so I’m careful about that every day.
It doesn’t wear as much as the numbers suggest. Of course, the dimensions differ between top and bottom.
Like anything, even if something says it’s for a specific application or compatible, you need to verify. When I install something other than the specified OEM part, I take responsibility, and I don’t want to fail either. Packing mistakes can happen, so verification is necessary for everything.
There’s not much difference, but I orient the notch toward the rear.
When threading the seal, protection is key. I think of it not as whether it will tear, but as precaution so that even a 1% chance of error doesn’t happen. Of course, when lowering it all the way, I lubricate the inner part and lower it smoothly and as parallel as possible for safety.
I’m not always working with brand-new or pristine inner parts. I clean off rust, but it still concerns me. I smooth the clamp areas, but that concerns me too. If I work to prevent problems, I think the risk drops dramatically.
The oil seal just needs a pusher to press it in from above—that’s all the press-fit required. You don’t need to hammer it hard.
If it’s going in at an angle, that might become a job that requires more force.
The distance collar seating wasn’t great, so I adjusted it.
