Some bikes are surprising in how little grease is applied to the frame in its factory-fresh state.
“Well, it’s brand new, so it should be fine, right?”
That’s what you might think, but there really are good bikes and bad bikes.
Good bikes are keepers, bad bikes are duds—that’s the pattern you see here.
The rear doesn’t move through a wide range of angles, so the same spot inevitably gets heavy wear.
Combined with insufficient grease and moisture from washing, rust can develop and damage bearings that didn’t need replacing.
We’ve seen this happen more than once.
That’s why maintaining smooth operation early on prevents bigger headaches down the road.
If the bearings are in good condition with low mileage and age, many people have never even looked at them—but it’s definitely worth checking out at least once.
