This is an R1100 maintenance campaign.
We ended up wrapping it up for various reasons…
The cam shows no scoring and is in excellent condition—no issues ★
The cam chain is loose as expected—these R1100s have auto-tensioner springs that are
weak, so they won’t tighten unless they’re really slack. We forced it to tension.
This time we were able to push it three notches.
You can’t overdo cam chain adjustment! Tensioning it too much makes cranking heavy and puts tremendous strain on the chain and
tensioner, so please don’t get carried away and over-tighten it.
The engine damper was heavily rusted and wouldn’t budge, so we drilled out the head to get it off!
The damper wear is minor, so it must have been used gently.
The carburettor sync was slightly off, but we got it dialed in perfectly ★
We’ll test ride it tomorrow and we’re done ♪
