The flow is definitely vertical.
Horizontal accepts far more tiles, but the speed to ready is vertical.

This scene always comes up—I must have failed.
Horizontal: best case is all simples, two-sided wait, pair of dragons, bent for double, concealed win.
Vertical: all simples, seven pairs, pair of dragons, bent for half-flush, concealed full.
Considering the chance that two-sided wait doesn’t come through, seven pairs is the safer bet.
But if seven pairs doesn’t get all simples, it’s only 9,600…
And this choice always comes up—really always.
If I go vertical, I would have won by draw on horizontal. If I go horizontal, I would have won by draw on vertical. Or so it goes.
Counting remaining tiles or watching discards and draws—the result is the same…
A two-way choice always loses! That’s the thing.
The other day I pulled the wiring on a Sportster’s turn signal and couldn’t tell the color, so I just went “here goes!” and plugged it in.
But it still didn’t light up…I thought, not again, it’s backwards.
Well, not that it really matters, I guess.
