It’s been a while… ZRX1100. Not exactly neglected, but more like, what to do with it?
The fairing paint and maintenance are done, but this year’s heat caused the breather to spray gasoline quite a bit, which made things difficult.
We changed the coolant.
The caliper was so clean it didn’t even need washing. We gave it a light wipe and worked it over.
You really want to change the fluid once a year. We’ve already swapped it with the usual Golden Cruiser fluid.
The TMR has been making a sputtering sound lately. When you test ride it, it feels kind of hazy and off.
Going by old memories… we swapped out the jets and so on. It’s running nice now.
It’s really come alive.
Don’t you want 10mm more around the tank and handlebar area?
The handlebar flexes, and in a crash the tank gets dented! Your heart gets dented too! So we restrict it right up to where the handlebar lock engages to prevent that.
With bolts, the thickness needed to avoid stripping threads is awkward. Welding and then grinding seems like the easiest approach. You can just grind it back down if you need to revert it.
About that gasoline spraying issue. In the end, we added a Suzuki OEM breather plus a Posh breather for better layout. It stopped completely. The tank no longer pressurizes from heat, and air flows in and out smoothly—it’s working perfectly.
We made a temporary catch tank from scrap material. It’s a hassle to go buy a container, and the size and shape are awkward anyway. When we rummaged around, we found some bent pipe.
Capacity-wise it seemed good enough, so we went ahead and made it.
For something we threw together quickly, it’s pretty neat. It’s held on with cable ties for now, but it’ll do.
It’s M6, and we even fitted a drain.
