If you have to manipulate the caliper for 30 minutes or an hour before the piston operates properly, something’s wrong.
Making the decision to replace the seals early is the most time-efficient and practical approach.
Usually, debris gets gunked up in the seal groove like in the photo, and the body corrodes.
That corrosion damages or deforms the seal, which is what causes poor piston operation.
It’s not stiff because you haven’t manipulated it enough—the seal has reached the end of its life and the groove debris is causing the problem.
A thorough cleaning and reassembly alone will deliver more than adequate performance.
Conversely, if the cleaning isn’t thorough, the symptoms are likely to return.
It’s kind of like doing a sloppy job treating a cavity and then just capping it.
With proper cleaning and reassembly, you’ll be amazed at how well even stock calipers operate.
