Kawasaki OEM parts “CHECK! Discontinued” Zephyr 550 quick lookup.

Yep.
The world’s starting to smell a bit like summer break, isn’t it?
It’s hot outside, so my motivation to ride is at zero percent.

The Zephyr 550 content I’ve got left is getting really good engagement, so I’m torn between that and Makita.
I did a light comparison of Kawasaki OEM parts for the Zephyr 400/550 and checked which ones are discontinued.

OEM parts are too late once they’re discontinued.
Prices keep climbing, so if you’re planning to replace something, grab it now? That’s the deal.

Let me tell you about the parts I’ve kept for now.

Air filter is common—peace of mind

11013-1157 Element air filter ¥3,938

This part is common to 400/550, so no worries.
You might think an air filter is obvious, but Suzuki and others have frequent discontinuations.
Supply availability for consumable parts like this is really important.

Surprisingly, OEM wires and cables are a bit risky

First, all cables and wires on the Zephyr 400/550 are common .

The speedometer cable is already discontinued and stock limited is also showing.
However, for cables and wires,
repro parts exist for all of them so there’s really no need to worry.
If you’re a purist about OEM, you might want to hurry.

Steel plates are common, friction plates are 1200 Daeg?

Several differences were found.

Discontinued Clutch hub 13087-1052 (550) 13087-1162 (400)
Discontinued Clutch housing comp 13095-1030 (550) 13095-1326 (400)

Friction plate 13088-040 (550) 13088-013 (400) *550 is common with ZRX1200 Daeg
Clutch plate T=2.0 13089-023 400/550 common
Clutch plate T=2.6 13089-1067 400/550 common
*Steel plates are common so the shape is the same.
Friction plates have different part numbers including the housing, so check compatibility with FCC and such.

Clutch spring 92081-139 (550) 92081-120 (400)
Clutch lever release 13168-1432 (550) 13168-1540 (400)
*Clutch lever release has different part numbers, so I’m wondering if maybe the length is different?

Intake manifold is common and available

16065-1234 *1 #1 intake manifold
16065-1235 *2 #2/3 intake manifold
16065-1236 *1 #4 intake manifold
Intake manifolds are really important. I recommend getting them on hand for now.

Head cover gasket and cam plug are common

11060-1329 Head cover gasket ¥3,993
92066-1401 Cam plug is premium ¥1,716*4

Cam plugs are a bit pricey because they’re decorated.
If a plain, undecorated one can be used instead, I’m fine with that.
¥1,716 each × 4 is a bit painful.
By the way, the head cover is discontinued, so it might be worth getting ahead of time.

Cover gasket part number is common. But cover part number is?

11060-1055 Gasket generator cover
11060-1053 Gasket pulsing coil cap
11060-1054 Gasket clutch cover

14031-1240 550 generator cover (discontinued)
14031-1313 400 generator cover
What’s different is unclear?

14024-1819 550 pulsing cover (discontinued)
14090-1745 400 pulsing cover ¥3,410
Part numbers are different, but the differences aren’t clear. Since the gasket is common, it should work.

14032-1280 550 clutch cover (discontinued)
14032-1365 400 clutch cover (discontinued)
If you can find a clutch cover in good condition, it’s worth getting.

If you’re going to ride long-term, I’d want to keep the stator coil

Stator 21003-1256 550/400 common—quite a premium item. ¥34,980
Flywheel 21050-1159 550/400 common discontinued.

It’s not urgently needed, but replacing it before trouble strikes might be a good move.

Starter motor/starter clutch

21163-1150 Electric starter motor 550/400 common ¥40,150
13193-1002 Starter one-way 550/400 common ¥5,819
16085-1030 Starter gear 550/400 common ¥6,721

These are still available for purchase, so that’s reassuring. The starter motor assembly has quite a punch in the price.

A surprisingly common problem! Shift return spring breakage

I don’t have a great impression of this area on Kawasaki bikes. Price-wise, it’s very reasonable.
It might be worth replacing ahead of time.
Stock them while you can—you won’t regret it.
550/400 common
13161-042 Lever comp change shaft ¥6,248
92144-1074 Spring ¥440
92083-018 Spring ¥429

The Zephyr has an engine damper too! Get it soon.

550/400 common. The bolt is discontinued, so you can use one from Honda or similar
92075-1377 Damper main ¥1,298*2
92075-1274*part number changed Damper ¥770*2

Swingarm area parts are worth checking too

55020-1353 Guard chain ¥2,486
33032-1146 Shaft swingarm ¥2,772
92049-1166*2 Seal oil ¥506
The distance collar discontinuation is a bit painful.
However, it’s really nice that chain slider (guard chain) is still supplied.
Plastic and rubber parts become really problematic when discontinued, so I recommend getting them ahead of time.

Front and rear axle shafts are discontinued—watch out.

Front and rear axle shafts are common to 550/400 but out of print.
A quick search didn’t turn up any repro parts. That’s a bit odd.
You could have fun modifying shafts with some custom work and upsizing.

It’s really nice that important rubber parts are still supplied.
But Kawasaki from this era has loose dampers, which is a bit frustrating.
It might be fun if you could adapt something more solid.
92075-1687 Damper ¥2,431

IN/EX common camshaft 550/400 have different part numbers (discontinued)

Zephyr 550 12044-1034 Camshaft
Zephyr 400 12044-1243 Camshaft
The camshaft is naturally discontinued, but the part numbers are different—they must be tuning them slightly differently.
This engine has really high compatibility, and there are various year-specific specs, so it’s pretty interesting.

12046-1019 Camshaft sprocket 42T is common but discontinued
If you can get the cam sprocket first, you can make it adjustable, so I’d like to prepare for that.
