GPz550 Communication 12/11. “E/G noise bothering me 5 seconds before?” Tappet clearance and cam chain visual inspection (*´ω`*)

Good morning, max.
It’s been a while since my last blog update.

Things have been chaotic since the move, and I haven’t been able to work on much or blog.
With year-end timing, we’re getting an unusually high number of visitors.

I had a little free time, so I hugged the head cover and checked what’s inside.

E/G is concerning… a subtle sound like a cam chain

There’s been this subtle engine noise since I bought it.

Basically, I’m not that particular about details, so I don’t usually mind it.
But this is a sound that’s hard to ignore.

When something moves, “it either rotates or reciprocates,” that’s about it.
Somehow, the rotational sound goes shhhhhh shhhhhh like that.
The other day I replaced the cam chain tensioner with the latest one for the Zephyr,
and I checked the tension, so it should be okay?
“I haven’t visually confirmed the tension” = “There’s a sound and I’m a bit worried.”
I checked the tappet clearance too.

The number of head cover fixing bolts is abnormal (*´ω`*)

With so many bolts, just removing the head cover is a bit of a hassle.

Anyway, I have the manual, so I checked the tappet clearance.
If it’s within the specified range, it’s OK. But if it’s on the edge, it’s a bit risky.

The shim thickness available as a single item is in 0.05mm increments, so you can’t adjust it too precisely.
The rocker arm type is convenient.

Head cover gaskets and cam plugs are available as genuine parts

It’s amazing that such small parts are still available.
It’s just a gasket, but if it’s discontinued, it’s a real problem.

Well, these days, if it’s a paper gasket,
there are various places that can make one, so you can manage.
But for something like an oil-cooled head cover gasket made of molded rubber,
it would be difficult to reproduce.

Regardless of the manufacturer, owning an old motorcycle requires a certain level of preparedness at the parts level.

Cam lobes and engine interior are clean, clearance is no problem

This engine has inner shims, so you can’t tell the shim thickness without removing the cam.
In other words, if the shop doesn’t have stock, the job won’t be done that day.

Fortunately, this time the clearance was good and I didn’t need to remove the cam.

Clearance and cam chain tension are both fine

Once again, I confirmed the importance of removing the head cover to
check the tappet clearance, cam holder tightness, and cam chain tension.

Seeing it with your own eyes and understanding it through your hands really boosts your confidence.
So now I can finally open the throttle fully.

The only concern I had was
whether the cam chain tensioner (the bow part) was broken.
It’s not something that breaks easily, but…
I knew someone who had it break before, so I was a bit nervous.
