Brake master/clutch release/brake calipers are incredibly important. Especially the rear brake master and clutch release—many vehicles have never been touched.
Most of them are leaking, so it’s safer to check as soon as possible.

Basically, there are two types. Large and small versions exist. 23163-06B00 is the small one, 23163-05A00 is the large one This GSX-R1100J uses the smaller version. If you use the larger one, it gets slightly lighter, but only slightly…
Sure enough, it was leaking as expected (*´ω`*)
As rubber hardens with age, it’s a good idea to replace the cup when you remove the sprocket cover.
This cup opens when hydraulic pressure is applied, so actual leaks are hard to notice. As it deteriorates, the sharp point of the umbrella shape disappears and the whole thing becomes mushy.
If you notice the feel is getting worse, an overhaul might be worth considering. Also, K Factory offers an aluminum-machined clutch release. Upgrading by replacing it might be an option too.
By the way, K Factory’s release uses an O-ring, so durability seems higher.
Reborn wet blasting performance is outstanding
You can achieve such clean finishing that you can show the work process. You definitely can’t get this kind of result just by hand-polishing.
I think most maintenance work is actually cleaning. Being able to work efficiently, quickly, and cleanly is really important. Time is finite. If you’re thinking of continuing this work a bit longer, I think equipment investment is worth considering.
The side stand mounting is also loose with the lock nut missing, so I’ll replace it.
Quite a few people are missing this, so checking it is a sure bet. Also, if you slightly extend the bolt shank below the head and use a lock nut, reliability increases significantly.
Gradually replacing corroded parts
This work is kind of like a wet blasting test. Well, having a wet blaster is what allows us to restore it this cleanly.
Without one, you’d have to outsource the work or paint it. Trying to work efficiently and maintain good balance on your own really makes you appreciate having the right equipment. And the work speed is completely different.
I stock most of the parts commonly used for oil-cooled bikes, so the pace is different. For example, if you order on Sunday, it arrives Tuesday or Wednesday.
You can’t avoid ordering mistakes—a single screw or O-ring. Even though everything seems readily available, careless mistakes can push things back a week or two.
I also installed a new catch tank collar with future use in mind. Securing it with a wider surface prevents cracking.
Don’t use the OEM fuel tank molding. The OEM molding from this era is just rubber, attached with really disappointing double-sided tape or adhesive. But it doesn’t hold well, and in reality, it usually peels off.
I used to rely on Suzuki OEM, but the price has skyrocketed, so Amazon’s automotive molding works just fine. It’s reasonably priced and comes in good lengths, so even if it fails, it’s easy to replace. These cheap little Amazon items are actually useful, you know.
