【Z1-R Season 3】Deliberately using the “Zephyr 400 stock carburetor (CVK30)”. Aiming for the ultimate street Z with an air cleaner BOX setup

I’ve come back to this again (;∀;)
Once I ride it, there seem to be quite a few areas that are lacking and need improvement.

There are various other things this time, but
first I’m going to change the “Keihin CVK30 to an air cleaner BOX setup”.

Z1-R Custom Project Season 3

Theme: “The strongest daily use (daily commute)” .

This time’s choice:

  • Carburetor: Zephyr 400 stock (Keihin CVK30)
  • Intake setup: Stock air cleaner BOX connection

Objective:

  • By choosing a 30mm bore similar to the stock (VM28), we ensure high flow velocity at low RPMs, improving torque and throttle response for city riding.
  • With the smooth characteristics unique to CV carbs, it’s a setup that won’t tire you on long rides.

Conclusion: Bigger bore isn’t everything. It’s a “smart choice” that matches Japan’s road conditions.

My precious ones keep leaving the nest (;∀;)

This is a CVK30 I had acquired thinking I’d use it on a GPZ550.
Even I have to say… it’s quite a good plan…

I’m going to overhaul this and prepare to install it on the Z1R.

I gave it a quick clean with my favorite Wako’s carburetor cleaner.
There’s no need for wet blasting, so I’ll finish it as is this time.

I keep making careless ordering mistakes (;∀;)

Oops? I forgot to order the starter valve…

I thought I ordered them, but I’m short 4 O-rings…
I wish I could just click and order easily with an ordering format.

I’ll finish it with inspection and cleaning.

Even Keihin has this kind of thing.
Everything’s slightly off. There’s a precarious situation where it catches the seal area.

I polished up the parts I’m reusing.

I’m reusing the float valve.
Compared to some junk… they’re the same!
Learning from junk like this is valuable, and since these parts aren’t made by the bike manufacturer, going upstream…
it’s reasonable.
It’s well designed, really.

So it’s done pretty quickly.
I really think carbs should be Keihin…

And the appeal of a simple carb with no unnecessary parts is great too.
After this, air cutoff valves and such get added, increasing part count, and
if rubber parts or passages go wrong, I can’t even imagine what bad effects or symptoms might occur.
I think every day that simple is best.

So installation is done pretty easily

It won’t fit as is, but… with a little modification it looks clean like this.
This modernizes it.
Since the carb is easy to remove and install, I’ll do fine adjustments from here.

The throttle response is very slow, so I thought about converting to a high-throttle setup… but the holder itself is too tight, so it’s impossible.
Since it’s a throttle, improper modification could be dangerous, so I’ll leave it as is for now.

I haven’t test ridden it yet, so it’s completely unknown what it’ll be like.
・Throttle cable inner length needs shortening
・Air cleaner BOX pig nose mounting
・Carburetor tuning

So it continues like this (‘Д’)

Z1-R Season 3: Installing Zephyr 400 Carburetors (CVK30) with Stock Airbox.

Choice: For the new season, I chose Keihin CVK30 carburetors originally from a Zephyr 400 . Reason: While it may seem small for a 1000cc bike, the 30mm bore is perfect for street riding. It maintains high air velocity at low RPMs, providing excellent torque and throttle response compared to larger racing carbs. Setup: Connected to the stock Z1-R air cleaner box for weather protection and reliability. It’s the ultimate “Grand Touring” setup.
