[Z1-R] Custom “Season 2” Finally Entering the Final Stretch! Upgrading the Shift Arm for Crisp, Precise Operation

The tachometer is taking a while to come back (;∀;)
The brake pads finally arrived, so I’ll continue with the work.

Today’s Maintenance & Customization Log

Vehicle: Kawasaki Z1-R

Progress: The long-term custom project “Season 2” is finally entering its final stages!

Today’s Work: Changing (replacing) the shift arm.

Purpose and Effect:

To optimize the linkage ratio (lever principle) with the rearsets.

Eliminates the characteristic “mushy” and “hard to engage” shifting feel of older Kawasaki bikes, achieving an exquisite shift feel where even the slightest ankle movement results in a crisp “click.”

Gale Speed parts are worth targeting

More offset is better than less for recovery.
I ordered a shift arm for the Z900RS. I wish I knew the offset amount and arm length.
Well, since it’s a small part, they probably don’t list it for adaptation purposes anyway…

If the tooth count and diameter match, these types of products can be adapted.

Making the shift rod more straight

Since I’m bothered by it, I’ll just straighten it myself (*´ω`*)

I’ll adjust the offset amount as needed with spacers.
I think iron-based materials are safer if possible. This time I used SUS304.

I’d like to move it a bit more inward, but…
Since the ball joint has exposed threads, I stopped at flush fit.
I’m cautious, so I applied thread locker.

That looks much cleaner now.

Compensating for the length change from the Zephyr 400 CVK30 conversion

The intake manifold + carb + duct combined is shorter than the stock VM.
Basically, the air cleaner box has moved forward.

Since the dimensions are tight, I simply added a spacer like this.
I almost forgot to do this work, so it was a close call (;∀;)

I used a KOSO choke extension kit to make the choke operable.
This is a handy item for people using vacuum carbs.

Needless to say, I bought it for myself. Hehe

Original pads. The second set? arrived.

The noise has been significantly reduced, so the embarrassment is much less now.
Pad grease is somewhat effective with these types of pads.

Now we’re just waiting for the tachometer.
The meter shop had a stuffy nose when I called. I’ll refrain from rushing them.
Please wait a bit longer.

Kawasaki Z1-R “Season 2” Nearing Completion: Upgrading the Shift Arm.

Vehicle: Kawasaki Z1-R. The iconic, angular masterpiece of the Z series. Work: Changing the shift arm to optimize the shift linkage geometry. Details: The second major phase (“Season 2”) of customizing this legendary Z1-R is finally entering its final stages! The heavy lifting is done, and now we are focusing on the critical details. To cure the somewhat clunky shifting feel typical of classic Kawasakis, I changed the shift arm. By correcting the leverage ratio and linkage angles with the rearsets, the shifting goes from vague to a crisp, precise “click.” Verdict: The difference in operation is incredibly satisfying. “Season 2” is almost complete, and I am highly anticipating the final test ride!
