[Maintenance Log] Perfect Match for Cast-Iron Discs! GS1000S × AP Calipers (CP2696/CP2195) with SBS 523HF Pads

The other day, after finally finishing the consumables replacement and taking it for a test ride…
the brakes felt a bit weak. When I mentioned this, they said “let’s swap the pads too, no problem!”

It was Obon season… would they even come?
It’s tricky to propose work when you suddenly think of it. But having that determination to do things right is what matters.

Currently, no trains are running to JR Mobara Station *2026-8/15 20:00
There’s no point in rushing, so I’ll just work without worrying (*´ω`*)chu

Today’s Brake & Suspension Tuning Log

Target Vehicle: Suzuki GS1000S (Custom Suspension Setup)

Brake Configuration: AP Racing (Lockheed) CP2696 / CP2195 Calipers + Cast Iron Disc Rotors

Common Pitfall: Pairing modern aggressive sintered (metal) pads with cast-iron discs causes the hard metal particles to wear the soft iron like a record, resulting in severe rotor damage and frequent brake squeal.

Our Choice: SBS 523HF (Ceramic/Resin Street Pads)

Shop Owner’s Take: The true beauty of cast-iron discs lies in their “fingertip-responsive initial bite and linear control.” To unlock that sweet, delicate touch while minimizing rotor wear, pairing with quality resin pads is absolutely the right answer!

SBS 523HF Resin Brake Pads

AP Racing OEM pads are so expensive you could buy a whole caliper instead.
I was torn between brands A, B, and C, but went with SBS.

Most importantly, the price is really reasonable.

The back-side finish is nice and thin too (*´ω`*)

It looks like it’s got pretty high expectations.
I prefer sintered pads myself, so I use Daytona, but I think the cast-iron option is quietly excellent.

The pads were so thick I didn’t notice, but they’d worn quite a bit.

Clean up and improve piston operation

AP-RACING calipers with poor operation need serious massaging.
The first bleed won’t retract by hand at all…

Only after multiple cycles does it finally settle in.
The design is nice though.

Chamfer only in the pad’s rotation direction.
I want the disc to engage the pad smoothly.

The quick-pad pins were also finished with wet blasting.

After Chiba’s heavy rain. Heading toward Isumi

I won’t head north for the test ride—it’s definitely dangerous, so I’m staying away.
I wondered how the Isumi area was doing, so I went to check… “All normal”

The linear rain band must have moved up locally from Mobara through Oami.
Our area didn’t have any issues either…
But it could happen to us tomorrow.
Thinking about how similar rainfall could cause disasters anywhere makes me a bit anxious.

I found myself thinking about flood prevention measures again today.
Structurally, neither the shop nor my home should flood, but it’s too late once it happens.
Well, it looks pretty solid, so I’ll report back later.
I ditched the flood barrier—it was too much of a hassle.

Anyway, the front brake now locks up—finally got it working right.
Now I can ride with confidence.
Even though it’s someone else’s bike… the GS1000 is really a great machine.
It’s got a completely different feel from the Z—you can really tell it’s the later design!
And that’s the completion!

Topic: Optimal brake pad pairing for Cast Iron Brake Rotors & AP Racing CP2696 / CP2195 Calipers using SBS 523HF ceramic/resin pads. Details: Happy Saturday night from the Decoboco tech bay! Continuing our GS1000S optimization series, today’s log focuses on brake friction pairing. Pairing aggressive sintered metal pads with vintage cast-iron discs is a severe mistake—hard metal particles rapidly chew up the softer iron surface, causing grooved rotor wear and unbearable squealing. The perfect match is the SBS 523HF (Ceramic/Resin) compound. Verdict: It offers exceptionally low rotor wear, virtually zero brake squeal, and unlocks the signature, progressive “velvety” bite that makes classic cast-iron braking legendary. Matching pad compound to rotor metallurgy is the ultimate mechanical calibration!
