The manual is the “stock flavor.” It runs fine even if you move it back and forth.
Conversely, some people prefer the feel of something other than that stock setting, so stock isn’t absolute.

I chose Shell Advance Ultra 4T 15W-50 for the engine oil.

I prefer Vesrah oil filters.
With the GSX1100S, the O-ring comes included as well, which is much appreciated.
