When the owner filled up with gas, someone said, “Wow, you’ve done some amazing modifications to that Zephyr!” (according to the owner)
Is the Zephyr’s finish really that good, or has the Z2 started to look modern? It’s a puzzling situation.
When the funnel was lengthened, the sidecover started to interfere, so we’re going to offset it. I wonder if we can pull it off…
First, let’s test it out. Ideally we’d like to use it, so we’re making plates with different offsets to check the dimensions. (Both ended up in the trash.)
Having a shearing machine and punch press is really handy for times like this.
Once you know the dimensions, the rest goes quickly.
I always want people to remember that the first one is always the hardest.
I would have preferred to finish it with spot welding, but it wouldn’t fit, so I docked it together with TIG welding.

Two would sit really poorly,
and six would stick out too much, so we went with four.
The owner also wanted the rear reservoir tank to be bolted down.
There’s no threaded hole to pull from, and most of it is painted anyway…
So we went with a piggyback strategy using the offset bracket we made earlier.

It looks like it’s sticking out, but it’s actually sitting snugly in the sidecover, so don’t worry.
We made it from SUS304 stainless steel, 2mm thick, so it’s pretty solid and secure.
The bolt head sticks out about one head’s worth.
