When you call out to Google on your phone looking for a nearby motorcycle shop—( ﾟДﾟ)—
it seems we come up.
The battery might be dead? There might be a flat tire? The engine won’t start? Lately, I get a lot of people saying “the engine won’t turn over.”
What on earth?
First, it’s about where they bought it from.
It doesn’t matter if it’s from Yahoo Auctions, Mercari, or a local motorcycle shop.
What I wonder is whether they’ve found a motorcycle shop they can build an ongoing relationship with going forward.
There really aren’t that many shops that say “everyone’s welcome”—or so I think.
So the first important thing is to find a shop you can consult with before something breaks.
Next, there’s optional insurance.
We don’t handle emergency calls at all.
When I get those sudden calls
and suggest “I’d recommend having your regular motorcycle shop tow it with your optional insurance,”
usually there’s silence, then
“Oh, never mind.” and the call ends.
I suspect what’s happening is…
First, they don’t have optional insurance, and second, they don’t have a regular motorcycle shop.
I think that’s a pretty haphazard way to live the motorcycle life.
If someone shows up out of the blue, I’ll at least listen to what they have to say.
When it’s a flat tire, often it’s not actually a flat—it’s “the tire has no tread left.”
When the engine suddenly won’t start, it’s surprisingly often “battery degradation or fuel pump failure.”
Living the motorcycle life without getting advice from anyone about your situation is a pretty rough road.
