Japan’s major steelmakers have all moved to implement significant price increases across both blast furnaces and electric furnaces. The main reasons are exchange rates (yen weakness), logistics costs, labor expenses, and surging raw material costs like steel scrap.

Major Steel Price Increase Trends for Spring 2026

• Tokyo Steel (First across-the-board price increase in about 4 years)
  • Timing: From April 2026 contracts onward
  • Details: Structural shapes, round bars, and thick plates increase by¥5,000 per ton. Thin plate-related products increase by ¥7,000 per ton.
• Nippon Steel
  • Timing: From May 2026 shipments onward (※Steel pipes already saw a 5% increase starting in February)
  • Details: Thin plates for retail sales and similar products increase by¥10,000 per ton (first revision in about 2 years). Special steels like stainless steel are also seeing additional increases starting in the March bracket.

• SS400 (General Structural Rolled Steel) As a base ordinary steel, it bears the most direct impact from this manufacturer-wide price increase (¥5,000 to ¥10,000 per ton scale). Procurement costs for all types of flat plates, angles, round bars, and similar materials used in bracket fabrication are rising.
• SCM440 (Chromium-Molybdenum Steel) and Other Special Steels In addition to the base steel price increase, the cost of alloying elements added to it also impacts the price. Round bars of SCM material used when turning and fabricating one-off special tools or making axle shaft collars continue to trend at elevated prices.
