⑭ Starting from the frame: KZ1000/KZ1000MK2/Z1R. Oil drain relocation

You can also check the transmission from the back, so it’s like getting two benefits in one, I guess?
Old bike oil changes mean removing the muffler—that’s the image. It doesn’t matter to the customer, but honestly I find it a pain, so I’m relocating the drain while I’m at it.

I removed the oil pan. I can’t see the belly of the shift fork, but this looks reassuring. The transmission gears aren’t chewed up, and the dogs are in excellent condition.

I happened to have a Z1R the other day, so I checked its oil pan. Now, where should I relocate it to?

The existing location is a flat type, so I’ll leave that as is.

My first choice: the lowest position.

I’d need to take about 25 mm diameter for the welded boss, so I’d have to grind down the fins and it gets messy—rejected.

I decided to put it just in front of the oil filter.

Open it up—

Strip the paint—

Weld it—

Apply liquid gasket from the inside—

Done! It’s cast iron, but this time it didn’t bubble up much—saved me there.

Considering whether to tap the oil temperature from the oil pan!
