Wheel bearing movement and distance collar position
Check the wheel bearing movement while also confirming the distance collar position. Bang! Bang! When you tap the axle shaft in, depending on timing the bearing can shift and the distance collar can end up loose and rattling.
There are also cases where the bearing press-fit area on the wheel side simply wears thin and the distance collar ends up loose and rattling. It’s reassuring to check the bearing movement and distance collar position condition.
Front and rear sprocket tooth count, chain size and link count
Front and rear final drive and chain brand and link count are info you want to keep on file. Of course, knowing things like what the pivot-to-axle length is in millimeters can make you go, “Ah, I see!” when you ride and understand it better,
Brake caliper smoothness is everything! If it’s bad, disassemble right away
Brake pistons extend by“hydraulic pressure” and retract by“seal deflection.”
So the caliper oil seal is really important. After cleaning the caliper,if the piston retraction feels sluggish, it’s already time for an OH. One hundred piston pumps can’t beat a single OH.
A time-efficient and effective combination ofseal groove cleaning and fresh sealsgives great performance.
Smoothness is key for single-piston calipers
Single-piston calipers tend to get a bad rap. But with proper maintenance they still deliver plenty of performance.
We even chamfer the brake pad backing plate at spots where it should move smoothly, searching for that extra 1% improvement.
Replace rubber parts immediately if they’re swollen or deformed. If insertion feels off, clean thoroughly and check until it operates smoothly.
Applying silicone grease that won’t damage rubber is a safe bet (*´ω`*)
I have a bit of a quirk about this… I use OEM steel fasteners, especially Honda ones. For the nipples, I basically swap them out for titanium. I used to stick with steel nipples for years, but with fluid that attracts moisture, steel does rust.
Since nipples are small, the clamping feel is fine with titanium, so I go titanium there and steel everywhere else.
This Deco-mainte is different from before.
The old Deco-mainte was like inspection and maintenance where“you just disassemble, clean, and check items off a list”as you go. A lot of the time you’d take apart parts that weren’t obviously badand I thought, “Isn’t this kind of pointless?”
Especially fork oil changes—the cost-benefit is thin, and even an OH doesn’t really change anything. So people end up either not changing fork oil and just riding until an OH is needed… It’d be nice to change it more often and enjoy tuning the feel.
It was looking pretty good color-wise (*´ω`*) Sometimes just pulling off the carb and blowing it out with compressed air would fix it, but it’d end up being an OH anyway. There’s a lot of frustration with that kind of thing. So now we’ve shifted to “maintain as needed,” and we still handle the essentials properly, so it’s even more thorough!
Maintenance blogs aren’t very exciting
I hear that sometimes (*´ω`*) Readers want punchy content, so I can’t help it. Anyway, the axle shaft runout was fine. *Of course
The tire manufacturing date is a bit old. Probably time to change them at inspection. When you do a once-over like this, check the tires for punctures or foreign objects like nails.
They don’t cost much, so if it looks worn, go ahead and replace it. Maybe we need a little more kindness these days to keep from flattening someone’s tire?
I’m the type who just pulls fuses out and reinserts them. We changed them before, so they looked clean! There’s basically no problem, but I do it as a little good-luck ritual.
While we’re at it, we’ll touch up any worn spots.
The anodize was flaking off in patches and powdery, so we cleaned it up. (Both sides) That’s the moment when affection turns to LOVE, right?
We also polished up the oil filter cover (*´ω`*) Shiny and nice!
We changed the oil and oil filter. The oil is a blend of Shell Advance 4T Ultra 15W-50 and 10W-40. As it gets colder, I usually blend them like this.
The air is clean, so it runs well too?
Nearly stock since new, with about 80,000 kilometers on it. The idle is rock solid and it’s still plenty fun to ride! That’s the wrap.
We also cleaned up the muffler bracket (*´ω`*)hehe
