Let’s install the NCR oil cooler. It’s been a while since I’ve worked on my own GS1000S.
This is the NCR oil cooler that finally arrived after summer. Its sculptural shape is so nice that I just had to install it.

I want to keep the installation simple. Of course, the oil cooler needs to float, so I’m torn about the method.
There are various options: bolting it down, hooking it with tabs, pinning it, and so on. I’m not a fan of the rubber band-style mounting like on the number 34 bike because it looks bulky.
If the bracket warps, the bead warps too, so care is needed. As always, it’s not quite right—sad.
I made a bracket like this from SUS304 stainless steel, 2 mm thick. I think it’s important to keep parts as light as possible and maintain good serviceability when installing components.
Once you picture where it mounts, imagine the removal process too—that way you won’t be disappointed later.
I subtly shaped my flange nut by grinding it to make it more sculptural.
I used existing holes to fix the bracket. The M8 size is just heavy and the worst. I think M6 or even M5 would be plenty, but it’s too much trouble to change it.
I also used existing holes on the upper side and fixed it by hooking tabs on the bracket to hold it in place.
If it sticks out too far forward, it gets in the way when servicing the steering stem, so I positioned it at a good balance point.
Of course, it’s fixed at three points so it floats, giving excellent vibration damping.
