So here’s the GSF1200 that came in for inspection the other day ★
We’ve had quite a long relationship with this one, haven’t we

It’s a really clean machine.

Nobody asked me to, but let me check out the old front maintenance work ★

The GSF has a plastic cap on top of the seal
Back then I didn’t know any better, so it just stayed as is.

Here it is!

Whoa! Tapered roller bearings!
They’re a bit yellowed, but both the top and bottom are holding up nicely.
The preload feels a bit high to the touch, but that’s probably just age.
We cleaned both top and bottom thoroughly, re-oiled and adjusted them for better performance ★

Now for the main event

The oil condition is so-so

I ran both the OEM and SKF inner tubes through with metal-rubber lubricant to check their operation ★
Sure enough, they move smoothly.
I want them to work well ★, sure,
but what I really want is for them not to leak, which is why I’m testing this SKF now.
Spot rust shows up on pretty much all of them—once rust appears, there’s not much you can do.
So when someone says “I don’t want it to leak, so replace the inner tube!” …
If it does leak, I usually cover the parts cost and do it a few times,
but it can get surprisingly involved! That’s the thing.
