We generously fill the oil seal lip with fork oil or, lately, metal rubber, and assemble it.
Grease sealing sometimes leaves only dried-up residue, so we use liquid here. ☆

The inner tube is rusty. ☆ Don’t worry—we’ve cleaned off the rust. ★
Checking the dust seal movement. Modern seals move really smoothly—I’m impressed.
We’ll assemble it as is. ★

Metal/washer/oil seal/clip/dust seal assembled state—”stroke it fully”
“Full extension—full bottom—full extension—full bottom” and then we tighten it.
There’s surprisingly a lot of play between the bottom case and rod, so centering here makes quite a difference in how it moves.

The meter gear lip here is also working, but it’s adequate, so we called it good with lubrication. ★
