Checking the upper seal. Seals (rubber parts) take time to seat properly. I’m inspecting it in an unlubricated state.
That “bellowing” sticking out on the inside and outside really does make a difference. I smooth it out quite a bit with a whetstone.
The inside is fine as is. Lubricating the lip feels nice.
In the end, I cut off the outer “bellowing” and smoothed the inner lip. It moves really well now.
I don’t think you should do this on off-road bikes.
The bottom side looks good. Surprisingly, modern seals are pretty solid—you don’t really need to do this kind of work.
Older ones definitely need checking though.
