So here’s the sequel.
The fork oil seal is leaking badly, so we’re cleaning and replacing it.
 

 
We cleaned up some rust on the inner tube and smoothed it out. The rumored Ariete brand oil seal—
So what’s this? “There’s a material even better suited to fork oil seals than NBR. That’s XNBR. With wear resistance about 3 times that of NBR and tear resistance about 1.5 times that of NBR, it’s an essential choice if you’re after superior seal performance.” That’s what they say.
 

 
When we inserted the inner tube and tested the action, there wasn’t much difference in resistance, so it looks reassuring. We assembled it as usual and set it aside.
