Z1000LTD (KZ1000 Look) Inspection, Self-Point Maintenance, PAMS Clutch KIT Replacement—that’s what we’re working on today.

Air-cooled engines from this era are really something special, aren’t they? The people who created designs that are still loved after all these years deserve real credit.
Now let’s go ahead and replace the clutch plates.

I have to say, old bikes = scary image. What scares me? Well, the possibility that parts might have some weird configuration, or stripped threads that need a helicoil, or things that take way longer than you’d imagine just thinking about them.

You can’t just slap it together and call it done, so I want to share this worry with the customer too—that’s the feeling.

What’s with that spray-can-looking black? Kind of scary-looking.
That’s quite a rock-and-roll setup.
I remove it and check for discoloration and condition. Do we really need to look if we’re replacing it anyway?

Well, the old configuration and wear patterns are what keep us in business. With a hundred bikes, you get a hundred different stories, and I like to take a moment and really look them over.
Common reasons for slipping (just standard stuff plus a bit)
• Friction material wear
• Friction material hardening/degradation
• Steel plate discoloration
are what I see most often.

On older bikes, I think the friction material degrades first and slipping starts, then the steel plates begin to discolor.
There was some rust, but no discoloration.
Is there anyone out there who loves that aged, weathered patina?
That would be pretty hardcore.
