“I Bought a Katana…” GSX750S Drive Chain 520 Conversion Swap – Want to Hide the Digital Tach – Tandem Steps and More

Come by after Golden Week! “I bought a katana”….

The master craftsman finished it beautifully – it’s sparkling!
Apparently they forgot to request the chain swap, so this is a rush job before the tour (‘Д’)
Viva!

We’re going to do a 520 conversion! We’re a DID chain shop

We’ll change the final sprocket to your preferred tooth count.
Since we’re a DID chain shop, we can only choose the color… that’s how it is.
*We can order other brands too!

520 = thinner chain width

Looking closely.
With a 520, it’s a bit short = the nut won’t tighten all the way = if you back it off with a washer, the lock nut won’t hold.
We looked for a slightly longer bolt from a Savage 650 Bolt (10×40) Suzuki 09105-10005
We thought we’d order this… but the delivery time won’t make it during Golden Week.

Wait a minute… We had thin fine-pitch lock nuts in stock (*´ω`*)
Problem solved~

You want to keep the countershaft threads clean for a tight fit.

We use repeat ties for everything.

Since we want to assemble as gently as possible, fixing it in place makes the work subtly easier.

It’s reassuring to always have fresh lock nuts and washers bent in two or more places.

It’s been converted to 520. The rolling is nice and smooth~

By the way… the catch tank is also properly floating, which is reassuring.

Wrapping the wheel with a cover makes it less likely to get damaged during work.

Discussing whether to hide or remove the digital tach

Don’t want to lose the original vibe.
Remove it or hide it…
My recommendation is… “Let’s remove it”Because it’s a hassle… probably definitely.

“Let’s try hiding it and if it doesn’t work, we’ll remove it”We settled on this plan…

The fork and tank are close, and there’s no hand space

Time passes…

Initially we planned to spot weld plate to plate and be done…
But the bending required was so complex that it lacked flexibility.

What offers flexibility is“collar to round bar to plate”
The merit of this isthe contact position between plate and round bar is almost free

“up and down, left and right positioning and pivot angle are all free = fewer failures = the most important thing in fabrication”
That’s how we went about it.

And just like that – boom! – it’s complete.

Fortunately there was an M8 boss right in the perfect spot~ The dummy oil cooler worked as-is too.

With the handlebar at full lock, there’s about 5mm clearance with the fork.
We left about 10mm clearance on the tank.

With velcro, there’s about 5mm of play on each side so adjustment is possible.

From the rider’s perspective it looks like this.
Most of it isn’t visible, but the voltage and oil temperature are perfect I think.

Next we’ll install the tandem steps tomorrow and it’ll be complete~
