THE oil-cooled Katana is actually? Inazuma 1200. Fork oil change, stem bearing inspection, fluid and grip heater replacement, and more

This time of year before the new fiscal year gets really hectic in the motorcycle industry too.
We’ve completely stopped accepting new jobs right now, so work is actually moving forward.

Even so, there’s still plenty of work from before that hasn’t been done yet, so
I’ve got to keep things moving or we won’t be able to relocate. (*´ω`*)

Let’s start with the front end work

Clip-on handlebars that aren’t fixed to the top bridge really make disassembly work a pain, don’t they?
I always wonder
“How can you trust a handlebar that’s just clamped like this?” I find it hard to believe.
If it were me, I’d definitely put a safety wire on it.

I hang the front fork upside down and wrap it in a plastic bag and leave it.
A surprising amount of oil drains out, which feels great.

The fork oil was pretty dirty. It smells bad.

Let’s check the stem bearing (*´ω`*)

To be honest, there’s no denting at all, so I decided to reuse it.
With plenty of grease applied
and proper tightness, the steering feel is really good.

I’ll apply plenty of grease on top and bottom and assemble it.

Stem adjustment is so much easier with the right special tool

It might be discontinued, so please be careful.
I used to use a hook wrench because it was versatile,
but when you use the right special tool, the work becomes surprisingly easier.

Give it a try if you get the chance.

There’s no old Suzuki oil-cooled version, but reproductions exist for the GSX-R 1000 and Yamaha.
Tools like this are best picked up while they’re reasonably priced.

Then we bleed the fork oil and adjust the oil level to finish.

That completes the front work.

Molybdenum shot fan? Slide valve replacement

What about molybdenum shot?
It definitely smooths things out, but I wonder how much it really helps.
You can’t tell the difference without years and miles, so tell me in ten years.

From experience, I think the Inazuma 1200 works better with the carburetor half-removed for workability.

I made sure not to forget the washer, and I polished the cover with silicone spray.

The older the carb, the better it seats if you insert it from the air cleaner box side.

Let me work through the small details quickly

I charged the battery and replaced just the grip heater grip portion.
I thought removing it would be a pain, but since I’d worked on it before, it came off smoothly.

Putting the new one on was the hard part though…

They asked me to check the chain adjustment and left-right alignment, so I took care of that.
After the fluid change and securing the bar ends properly, we’ll be done.
