What?! A KR500-flavored RG500Γ! Work on selected requested areas within budget – that’s the story

Good evening, I’ve picked up tools for the first time in two months.
Motorcycle repair work really is fun, you know~♪ Truly.

The Nitron rear shock with a two-month lead time has finally arrived, so I’ll be installing it!

Sekaiimon, which makes eBay easy, is excellent (*´ω`*)

But first! I’m going to restore a spot that’s been bothering me.

M6 bolt that secures the bracket for attaching the fuel tank.
The POP nut threads are worn out. *Image is after restoration

I could just remove the POP nut and replace it, but
“there’s a high possibility it will remain inside the frame.” *Extraction is a hassle

If you carelessly mess with it and it falls inside, extraction becomes a real pain.
At some point, you’ll hear an annoying rattling sound.

On stock motorcycles, surprisingly
POP nuts are used quite often, but be careful when replacing them.
In areas that become bag-shaped from later work,
POP nuts are preferably… something I think about sometimes.

Tangless helicoils are so excellent… conversely? You can’t afford to fail.

A tangless helicoil is a type of coiled thread insert used to reinforce the strength of female threads (threaded holes).

Standard helicoils have a “tang” – a protrusion for the tool to catch during insertion, but
tangless helicoils don’t have one.

The main point is the benefit of “having no tang.”

  • Improved work efficiency: After insertion, there’s no need to break off the tang or remove broken tang pieces. This reduces work time and improves efficiency.
  • Eliminates tang removal troubles: Problems that can occur when breaking off the tang, such as tang fragments flying around or excessive force being applied, are eliminated.
  • Can be inserted from either direction: Since there’s no tang, you don’t need to worry about the insert’s orientation and can insert it from either side.
  • Can also be removed: Using a specialized tool, you can remove the insert after installation without damaging it.

They’re mainly used for reinforcing threaded holes in materials like aluminum and plastic where direct threading would lack strength, or for improving durability in areas where threads are repeatedly tightened.

Once you use them, you’ll understand – standard helicoils have virtually no advantages.
In fact, they only have drawbacks…
These are such excellent tools that you should consider switching to them.

By the way, it’s a bit tough that M10-1.25 isn’t available.

With tools like these, you can instantly and reliably repair troubled areas.
I really feel that tools are important.

So the first phase started with repairs.

The Nitron rear shock finally arrived (*´ω`*)

I’ll check the various dimensions before installation. This time, due to layout constraints, I’ll install this rear shock upside down. *Rod side up

I got a bit worried for a moment because the NITRON sticker looked upside down, so I double-checked.

Just replacing the rear suspension doesn’t feel quite right…

So I’ll grease up the linkage and assemble it.

I cleaned it up quickly. The inner sleeve was in good condition, which was a relief.
I’ll reuse the bolts and replace all the lock nuts with new ones.

When the fasteners are clean, the bike really does look tighter~

Reusable protective wrap is excellent!

It’s a wrap-like material for protecting cameras and such.
Using cardboard and protective tape each time is tedious and creates waste.

It’s a convenient item – reusable many times, compact storage, and provides soft protection.

I remove the wrap and check the clearance.

There’s plenty of room, so I’m relieved. So I’ll secure it with the specified torque.

While organizing the wiring, I noticed something concerning…

I don’t really like this protruding bolt sticking out.
I’ll remove the bolt to replace it with an iron one too… hmm, hmm, hmm

I thought the shift was wobbling a bit when I moved it slightly…
For a moment I thought it might be the crankcase, which gave me a chill, but
it’s called a sprocket inner cover – a part that has its own separate specification.
*Of course it was discontinued…

Welding to fix it is too much trouble! That’s a last resort.

I patrolled Yahoo Auctions at lightning speed.
There were two listings, and I got the cleaner one.
I’ll swap it in.

I have the parts list and manual on hand, which is a huge help.
*The manual and parts list are at your own expense! It’s proper etiquette to own them.

Oil seals are still available, but O-rings are unfortunately discontinued.
So I’ll reuse these.

So as usual, I stumbled right away and had to stop…

To be continued.
