In a Sense a Replica Boom? GS1000S Cooley Replica Inspection Watanabe SP2 Will the Fuse Become a Blade?

Well hello everyone, good evening. It’s getting gradually cooler out here in the countryside.
If I’m not careful, yesterday it got so cool I didn’t even need the air conditioner.

Finally I’m thinking maybe I should get back on the bike.
By the way, I’ve only been riding bikes for test drives since last month. That’s how hot it’s been.

The parts are coming together, so I’ll be working through them steadily.

Immediately experiencing the baptism of an old bike

After purchasing, the igniter breaks the next time I ride it….
What?! The first time??

The previous owner never had any problems with it…
That’s just one of those motorcycle things, right?
Anyway, after installing a used igniter and getting it fixed, it came in for service.

Nowadays there’s a proper GS1000/750 lineup

I rarely get requests to install a Watanabe SP2 on a GS1000, so I’m very unfamiliar with the information.

When I tried to order, it turned out to be a custom design….
In the old days, we used to adapt the Katana version and install it.
I looked into genuine parts for the GSX1100SR like pickup coils and signal generators, but

since the Watanabe SP2 is already kitted, there’s no need to adapt anything!

It’s nice that we’ve reached an era where you just order and install.

Reliable custom design! No more worries about ignition systems

Both the pickup and signal rotor come included as shown in the image.
We’ve reached an era where you don’t need adaptation information anymore (;∀;)

This signal rotor also looks like a very well-thought-out, highly compatible item.
It’s truly excellent.
For old bikes, it’s definitely Watanabe.

A rare centrifugal governor original full throttle in modern times

I believe the early GS 1000 had point ignition.
I’m filled with nostalgic feelings.

The hole position is slightly off and it doesn’t slide smoothly.
This is one of those old bike things, so be sure to check the movement.

It’s not a place you adjust that frequently,
but make sure to set it up properly adjustable just in case.

I carefully ground it down with a fine Nakanishi rotary tool to correct it.
I realized that just a tiny bit can make it not move smoothly.

For old bikes, I basically disconnect and check every visible connector

Just cleaning and lubricating with contact cleaner should help a lot.
And by occasionally disconnecting and reconnecting,
you might notice the connector getting hot and melting or other issues.

A cracked and melted 9-pin connector….
This one without a lock is probably Yazaki, right…

The terminals are slightly thinner. I don’t have them on hand.
Should I recrimp all the male and female terminals and swap in a 110 from inventory, or should I order Yazaki?
In the end, I went with the latter to save time.

Old bike Watanabe SP2 has a separate ignition harness for peace of mind

As shown in the image, the 12V ON and ground are taken from the vehicle body.
However, both the pickup line and the line going to the coil come directly from the SP2.
They don’t go through the main harness, so it’s reassuring.

Even on old bikes with tired main harnesses, it will still provide reliable ignition.

We’ll use PAMS’ excellent plug cords

The straight section from the ignition coil becomes shorter, giving you much more freedom in layout.
The wiring around the coil tends to get messy, doesn’t it?
Just making that area cleaner reduces the risk of problems.

To be continued.
