Amazon Tool Cabinet: “Size and Design Are Excellent” But 62-Point Rating—A Lovable Product with Minor Flaws

I needed a paint booth to apply gun coat finish to small parts.
When I had the shop in Tokyo, I used to set up a space on top of the compressor in the processing room for painting.

Since this is a new building, I can’t paint inside the factory.
Since I don’t paint frequently, I decided to build a mobile booth for the work.
When it comes to equipment like this, investing time upfront to build it properly will dramatically improve efficiency going forward.

I was shocked to find it about 7,000 yen cheaper on Rakuten while writing this blog.

I paid 23,740 yen, so that’s a -6,760 yen difference!
This is a common occurrence with e-commerce sites…
And honestly, what’s the actual production cost anyway… but still.

My frustration increased even more (；∀；)

Let me tell you about the crappy aspects of this product.

There are an absurd number of parts.
And they pack these panels so tightly in cardboard that they arrive dented all over.
Well, since it’s reasonably priced, that’s okay…

Basically everything is bolted together.
There are easily 60 bolts, not to exaggerate with 100.
Some don’t go in straight due to the structure, so you need to be careful.

You’re screwing right-hand threads into thin steel plate, so there’s no torque holding power.
It’s basically held by the pilot hole and paint.
I ended up applying threadlocker to everything to make it permanent.

The thin steel plate is really flimsy
—incredibly so. It might be better to avoid moving it around too much.

The sliding door latch magnets don’t work
—it’s beyond what hole tolerances can fix. And the magnet strength is quite weak.

That said, the size and design are absolutely perfect…
It’s hard to find an affordable cabinet at waist height
with the width and depth suitable for mounting a paint booth.

Well, it’ll get dirty anyway, so that’s fine…
I just wish it were a bit more sturdy.
Now that I know the size, I’ll look for something better in a few years.

Pilot hole and paint applied—won’t go in at all.

I tapped threads all down the center, but thinking about it, they’re right-hand threads
—there’s no way they can hold in such thin steel plate.It seems like the design forces them in and holds them that way?

And in some spots, you can’t screw them in straight, so I applied threadlocker to everything and fixed them.

Never taking it apart again—I applied Loctite 638 and called it done.

Assembly isn’t so much difficult as it istedious—that’s the only word for it.

There are so many bolts and no torque holding power, so
you have to apply threadlocker to each one as you go.

It’s like working on a disappointing custom bike with too many parts.

Time passed and I finally finished it while frustrated (*´ω｀*)

The finished result looks really nice, though.
It’s just incredibly flimsy. It might be best not to move it around much.

Storage and size are very good!
Overall, I wish it were more sturdy…

I’ll do some modifications for the paint booth.

I installed nuts to fix the compressor regulator
and punched holes with a hydraulic punch for cables and such.

I didn’t do anything too complicated this time.

The holes I punched are sharp, so wrapping them with the usual Amazon moulding is a good idea.

I’ll place drawer liners in the drawers.
That way things won’t rattle around.

Finding the right product is tricky when you don’t know the correct name.
What I learned this time was“EVA”as a material andthat shelf depth comes in standard sizes.
By the way, 350mm fit perfectly.
I went with gray embossed.

Characteristics of EVA Material

• Daily Goods: Cutlery, kitchen tools, bath mats, various cases, etc.
• Children’s Products: Toys, play equipment, kids’ furniture, etc.
• Other: Adhesives, films, wire insulation, etc.  

Precautions

• It’s sensitive to heat andprone to deformation. Be careful not to place it near heaters or other high-temperature areas.
• It can degrade from ground friction or prolonged strong impacts.  

That’s how I finally finished it on day two.

I struggled a bit, but it’s finally done.

The design and size are really excellent, but the steel plate is way too thin.
Plus, the bolt issue makes it impossible to disassemble, which is a problem.

This product is really a mixed bag—good and bad points all mixed together.
If you’re thinking of it as a toolbox or work space, I can’t recommend it at all.
In my caseit’s for a paint booth, so it’ll get messy anyway.
