The Manly GS1200SS Bike: 520 Chain Conversion with DID & Keihin CVR Slow Jet Swap & Inspection

That’s quite a sharp-looking muffler installed there.
It’s truly masculine (*´ω`*)

The design looks like it would suit not just the GS1200SS but any air-cooled vintage bike.
Since inspection appointments are getting harder to book this time of year, we’re pushing forward full steam ahead.

Today’s Maintenance & Customization Log

Vehicle: SUZUKI GS1200SS

  • A “manly oil-cooled bike” with rugged styling appeal.

Work 1: Drivetrain Lightening (DID 520 Conversion)

  • Switched from the stock thick chain (530 etc.) to a lightweight 520 size while maintaining strength. This dramatically reduces friction loss.

Work 2: Intake System Resetting (Slow Jet Swap)

  • Changed the slow jet (SJ) size on the Keihin carburetor.
  • Improved throttle response and stability from idle through initial throttle opening.

Result: The bike feels lighter when pushing and pulling, and the engine’s response to throttle input is now linear.

GS1000R Revival? Iida Racing Factory Monaka Silencer

GS-R Full Exhaust
It’s really well made~
Back in the day, I helped restore the #12 GS1000R.
The history and age of that era have become an aura, which is both awe-inspiring and challenging because there are so many irreplaceable parts.
On the flip side, back then “If it doesn’t exist, it doesn’t exist!” made the work easier to push forward.

For original parts from small shops, I think “if you’re a fan of that shop, buy generously.” This applies to
M-TECH as well as Ohno and Itou shops.
Of course, there’s a business aspect, but “holding inventory” is really tough.
The fact that original product development and sales start because of a love for that bike is huge.
If “maybe I’ll buy it someday” becomes more real and you click to purchase, it becomes the driving force for the next new product, I think. That’s what I believe.

Downsizing from 530 to 520 chain.

Since he occasionally enjoys spirited riding, he wanted to test the size reduction.
It became an unusual collaboration between DID, Sunstar, and RK.

The front is the same spline as the Zephyr~ For the rear, it’s Suzuki-specific PCD/holes/center bore.

Sprockets and such can be heavily out of stock depending on the season, so if you’re thinking about replacing them, you need to grab them early.

I prefer switching thread locker to liquid. I remove everything before installation.
Cleaning the counter shaft thoroughly beforehand feels great too.

Pre-coated thread locker on lock nuts makes it harder to feel if there’s an issue with the threads during tightening.
Though I doubt there usually is, better safe than sorry.

I bent three spots during the service period.

Re-processed the areas that were previously wet blasted.
That’s the nice thing about wet blasting…
Lightly removing a layer and making it beautiful is very efficient from a worker’s perspective.

Roughly matched left and right lengths using the pivot axle for adjustment.

Doing this teaches you about the pivot/axle distances of various bikes.
The Z is incredibly short…

And so we fell to the dark side of jet black…
Ah, Anakin…

Checked with Yoshimura A/F and it’s running rich

After installing the A/F monitor, yeah, it’s definitely running rich~ So we’ll drop the SJ down one size. By the way, we also changed the air filter to a 1400 version.

Some rust is normal on any bike. We cleaned it up anyway.
We also replaced the fuel hose.

If you find it hard to attach the throttle cable on a vacuum carb, try this.

Sometimes it’s easier to install the cap with the throttle open.
Binding the linkage is very efficient.

Don’t stuff anything into the slide valve. Please be careful.

From CVK to CVR, the carburetor has evolved.
The vacuum carb is very well made, but it has poor compatibility as the injection wave sweeps through the era.
“Carbs are Keihin”is absolutely reliable… no doubt about it.

Next week we’ll get the inspection and it’s complete~

Upgrading the “Manly” GS1200SS: 520 Chain Conversion & Slow Jet Tuning.

Vehicle: Suzuki GS1200SS, a rugged, oil-cooled beast. Work 1: DID 520 Conversion. Swapped the heavy stock chain for a lightweight 520 DID chain and sprockets. This drastically reduces friction loss and rotating mass, making the bike feel much lighter and more responsive. Work 2: Carburetor Tuning. Replaced the Slow Jet (SJ) in the Keihin carburetor to perfect the air/fuel mixture at idle and low throttle openings. Verdict: The throttle response is now incredibly sharp. A highly effective combo to unleash the true potential of this oil-cooled machine.
