At first I tried scanning at a convenience store. It wasn’t nearly as easy as I thought. After trying one book…

I gave up and went back to the workshop to think of a better plan. Looking for speed and quality, I rented the highly-rated CZUR ET MAX Book Scanner.
Good thing I didn’t buy it. Best for text, matte paper.
The lighting reflected off the paper, making setup difficult. If it’s too dark, it won’t recognize anything, so balancing this is extremely tricky.
High-contrast images like black and white are also problematic. It wasn’t the dream device the reviews made it out to be. Cutting and scanning definitely beats it.
With about 12 books total, including setup, I ended up spending about 3 hours. I got the hang of it, so next time would be faster, but I won’t be renting this scanner again.
I think scanning at a convenience store would actually be more reliable. It’s not suited for glossy photo paper—it’s really only good for text scanning. That’s the way to think about it.
At least I got it scanned, so that’s something, “Not buying it was absolutely the right call.” It was completely wrong for my needs.

The photographers from this era were really skilled. Photography was such a specialized skill back then that it really shows.
Composition, writing quality, and layout proportions
It’s beautifully laid out as both reading material and design. For something at the level of a light booklet, this quality is unbelievable. It was a remarkable era.
Everything about it is really well-made. It’s hard to find, but if the timing is right, try grabbing one on Yahoo Auctions or Mercari.
