GSX-R1100G inspection with brake caliper maintenance and aluminum piston conversion work requested.
Starting with the rear caliper—it’s a bit crusty, but for the year it might actually be in pretty good shape.
There’s some rust, but overall it’s in decent condition.
The key factors are the seal elasticity and the cleanliness of the seal groove—those determine everything.
Once a seal is shot, no amount of cleaning will help. If you’re going to spend the same amount of time, it’s better to replace the seal and clean the groove properly.
There are signs of contact damage somewhere. I’ll smooth that out. Since I’ve polished it, the groove is clean now.
Surprisingly important: cleaning the nipple contact area.
A piston kit is definitely the safest choice.
Inspection boosts confidence.
The bolts look like they might be from a later Bandit or something more recent… hard to say.
