We’ve been getting a lot of rain lately—pitter-patter—
but it looks like it’ll clear up tomorrow, so that’s a relief. I wonder if we’ll get some nice Indian summer weather. I’ve already planned out a short ride route. ☆ (Work? I’m working, I promise!)

First, we’ll replace the engine damper.
It looks like it’s been replaced once before, and the condition was good.
*We’ve replaced it with a new one.

One spot was stripped, so the customer asked for a replacement.
I was thinking, “Hmm, no helicoil?” but…
Since we had the part on hand, we went ahead and replaced it.

We replaced the generator damper. It was stiff—really squeaky!

I’ve turned into the cleaning guy.
I feel like I’m getting younger again.

We cleaned up the breather cover too. (No good photos of it though.)

We also replaced the starter motor O-ring.

Spots you can only polish when you move things out of the way are worth cleaning thoroughly.

The customer wanted the hose replaced, so we moved the carburetors.
It’s pretty dirty from blowback.

We kept the cleaning light—just a gentle wipe.
*If you’re not careful, things can go sideways…

While we were working on other things, the barrel polishing finished, so we’re getting ready for the Guncoat.
For reference!

Every time, I think to myself, “What am I doing?” …
Sigh.

The engine damper is the newer type (though still old) with no nut.
Applying grease makes the case wear more smoothly, I think.

That’s how it looked. The cam condition should be fine.
I’m guessing there might be signs of “super overheating”…
The sludge buildup on the engine walls and the hardened head cover gasket (rubber) are pretty stiff.
When the gasket is rubber, overheating = rubber hardens = oil leaks everywhere.
If the battery’s in good shape, turning off the engine at traffic lights might be better.

After that, we check all the parts to make sure we haven’t forgotten anything, then we button it up.

We tightened the cam chain one notch.
The auto tensioner doesn’t always pull as tight as you’d expect.
But looser is probably safer than too tight.

Fork oil replacement is complete.
The fork oil is Newtech synthetic.
We’re waiting on some small parts now. It’s about 87% done.
