A question crosses my mind in casual conversation…
Light or heavy, fast or slow, responsive or unresponsive, loud or quiet… there’s no end to it.
What are we comparing it to, and how does it measure up? It might be important to think about that clearly.
Comparison standard number one: Normal
This isn’t really a comparison, so please don’t use it much.
I’m the same way, but since most things are hard to quantify, I think that’s why we end up communicating in vague terms.
If the shop says, “Isn’t the throttle or controls feeling heavy?”
the customer will think, “Oh, maybe they are.”
If we compare it to the previous good condition and clearly articulate whether the controls feel heavy or light, I think we can reduce those subtle misunderstandings between us.
In the end, what are we both trying to communicate?
Often, the condition or symptoms in each of our heads just don’t sync up.
Especially with new customers, those kinds of exchanges are extremely difficult, and it’s not straightforward to gauge what level of quality they’re looking for.
If we can communicate information as concisely and clearly as possible, things move faster.
When you say that but I still don’t understand,
that’s when I ask: how is it right now? Would it be a bit better?
Or: this part bothers me. That’s enough.
Is it a failure or just wear? Value for money feels better when the cost is higher.
It’s not bad, and a dig-it-up-and-bury-it kind of work keeps things in good shape, but…
I sometimes think we shouldn’t get too sensitive about it.
