Be careful with fuel tank rust removal and coating
First, it’s probably best to avoid doing it yourself as much as possible. The chances of getting it right on the first try are quite low.
Once you’ve applied the coating, you can’t remove it anymore = if you fail, that’s it If the tank is in bad enough condition that failure wouldn’t matter, it might be worth trying. However, I can’t really recommend doing it preventatively.
We outsource it, but “the finish is a bit… hmm?”We’ve had that experience. You don’t know until you try various things, but we don’t use that place anymore. Currently we request work from a really sharp rust removal and coating expert.
Anyway, the rust removal here is excellent and the coating is very thin, so there’s very little buildup or pooling anywhere.
There’s the difficulty of coating uniformly, so I recommend avoiding DIY work as much as possible.
It’s finished looking just like a brand new tank. When we outsource it, we always check the inside completely with an endoscope.
I removed some of the bottom myself, but it was a tank in bad condition with rust all the way to the ceiling and the deep recessed area. Now we can use it with peace of mind and confidence.
Let’s assemble the fuel tank
A small trick makes the appearance cleaner. I changed the fuel sensor connection to a 110 connector.
Fuel tank removal and installation will be smoother.
Since the five holes are irregular, if you mark them like this once, future work should be easier. A Brother P-touch is really useful for small details, so it’s good to have one. *I’ll say it again, but don’t choose Dymo tape. The color sticks terribly when you peel it off.
I think it’s best to avoid using double-sided tape on exterior parts as much as possible. The hassle of residual adhesive when you peel off tape is unreal.
For these kinds of ribs, there are wonderful products with metal inside that can be removed and reused. These days you can get them reasonably from Amazon, so use those.
Anyway, I’ll turn it up to the red line and check! Idling is perfectly stable too
Starting is good and idling is perfectly stable. It would be the best if the engine revs smoothly up to the red line.
I think we’ve finally reached the starting point. The steering condition is poor, so you should think about it going forward. Also, since the battery is open-cell, it would be good to replace it with an AGM/GEL battery. That’s all for the work! You should be able to ride it comfortably.
