Good evening, everyone! I’m currently juggling about seven bikes at once, so I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed right now.
If I work on whichever job finishes first, the order gets all mixed up, right? That’s always the problem. This is an eternal challenge. I’m pretty sure things would be much cleaner if I moved to Chiba.
When the timing is right, I’m planning to start accepting new work from Chiba, so get mentally prepared for that. *Please note that I won’t be accepting that many jobs.
The engine makes a “clacking” sound when it warms up.
I’m not very familiar with the Blackbird either, and when I listen to it, I don’t hear any noise at all. It should be fine, right? That kind of answer didn’t satisfy them, so I went ahead and checked the service manual.
Three balancers are installed.
As shown in the diagram, three balancers are set up. I’m not sure if there’s really that much of a difference, but it’s worth taking a look.
Basically, the front and rear balancers on the right side of the bike are the main ones, and if that still doesn’t work, adjusting the idle gear balancer might help.
Here’s where the balancer adjustment is.
This is the front balancer first. It’s located at the lower right.
The rear balancer is located behind the right cylinder.
The idle balancer is located on the left side of the bike, around the area below the starter motor. It’s definitely not a place where you can easily fit tools.
So I tried adjusting it and…
The rotation direction is a bit confusing, so don’t get it wrong. Adjust it as shown in the diagram, and “back off one notch after it bottoms out.” That’s all there is to it. I think Kawasaki’s Ninja-series bikes might have this mechanism too. I think it’s probably a good idea to check on it occasionally.
When I adjusted it, I was amazed! It actually moves quite a bit. I thought “huh” and started the engine after adjusting, and then?
The engine stabilized just like when you synchronize the carburetors. I was pretty surprised! I didn’t expect such a big change. The weather is bad today, so we’ll do a test ride around Wednesday to finish up.
If you’re riding a Blackbird, it might be worth trying the adjustment. *Basically, you only need to remove the right-side fairing.
