You want to overhaul the brake master, but the parts are discontinued—that happens sometimes.
A recent example is the rear master overhaul parts for GSX1100SR/Y, which have been discontinued. However, when you look at the rear brake master cylinder body itself, it has the same shape and piston diameter as it always has.
In such cases, you can check older model years of the same bike or look up the part number of the master cylinder body itself, and you’ll discover something surprising.
This is a common pattern with Suzuki: “newer model years have ASSY settings” while “older models have individual part settings.” These days you can search all sorts of things online, so try reverse-engineering and checking things out. This time, the GSX1100S rear master OH kit is 69600-45820 and it’s available for purchase.
For GSX1100 SR/SY, item number 2 is the piston cup set, which is “piston cup/snap ring/boot” as a set. In this case, it’s only available as a set, and it’s been discontinued. 69600-45830 Piston Cup Set Discontinued
For GSX1100S SAE/SBE/SL/SSL, item 2 has a piston cup set setting. 69600-45820 Piston Cup Set 51162-70040 Snap Ring 69691-45001 Boot are all available as individual parts and can still be obtained today. Since we don’t know when these parts will be discontinued, I recommend getting them now.
Honestly, if you replace them now, you’ll probably be fine for the rest of your life.
Both old and new models have the same size, so you can safely use them interchangeably. GSX1100S rear master OH kit is 69600-45820
The image on the left is used. You can see the cup umbrella has already closed and become flat.
If you haven’t overhauled the rear master in 10 years, this is definitely something you want to check. Symptoms that occur when the rear master gets worn are:
• Return port gets clogged and rear locks up • Fluid leaks from the rear master rod area • Rear brake feel becomes spongy
Honestly, nothing good comes from it, so check it out when you get a chance.
