First, we clean the chain. If there’s enough room to get your hand in, cleaning the chain slider and the underside of the frame will make everything look nice.
The caliper is still in its bag—sorry about that.
We clean it as much as we can. Doing so sometimes helps us spot any problems that might be developing.
The distance collar was rattling around, so we adjusted it.
If you hammer the axle hard because it won’t fit in this condition, you’ll push the bearing out even more.
It’s amazing how tough these bearings are—they don’t fail even in this state.
When we remove it, we also clean the shaft hole. Sometimes when too much grease is applied, you get either a sloppy feel or a gritty one.
The shaft has a slight runout, but it’s still within acceptable limits.

• Remove dirt
• Check the piston condition
• Assess the seal condition by how well the piston retracts
• Check pad wear
The calipers clean up nicely, and a little massage brings their performance back to reasonable levels.
However, since the seal is rubber, it inevitably deteriorates and becomes hard and stiff. If you persist in working it, it’s wise to replace the seal, and the results will be much better.
We polish it as much as we can within reasonable limits.
I’ll polish it within the range where I can keep it looking clean.
