I flushed it with water until it was clean, but
“Requires water system replacement”
Just flushing won’t remove the rust, and

a hole will open up in the bottom of the pipe.
This time it’s just a coolant change, so next time

The threads on the top of the reservoir are stripped.

everyone’s favorite helicoil time.
I’ll drill out the pilot hole…
The seating surface is key, so I’ll cut threads.
With a helicoil tap
I press a nut with cut threads
onto the seating surface
to increase reliability.
Depending on the location
if you don’t tap it properly it won’t work
Like the cam holder section that’s angled
In a state where you think “what do we do?”
Well, when you remove it you don’t notice the oddness
It’s an easy spot to miss
When you think about it, old bikes are scary.
Tangless
Helicoil
Yeah… that one without the “tang”.
People still using that old black one
“You should replace it ASAP” seriously
Regardless of whether the old one can do it or not
“No frustration” “First try every time”

Accurate Tangless Helicoil
It packs quite a punch when you get the full set.
So I found something a bit suspicious

That’s amazing, really
Helicoils come in 1D-1.5D-2D
the numbers go up.
Larger number = longer
Bolt nominal diameter = 1D
M6 at 1D is 6mm
Super easy to remember.
Anyway, setting that aside
sometimes you want to use something shorter than 1D.
Like when it’s behind a plate
and the excess sticks out
In that case
“Cut it with sharp wire cutters”
With a tang, you can only
cut the bolt insertion opening.
With tangless
you can position the cut side toward the back
Even if you think you cut it properly
after the helicoil is installed “it might be a bit stiff”
that kind of risk is reduced.
It’s definitely a solid convenience feature
The sidestand feels weird~

I’ll clean it and replace the bolts and nuts.
Something pretty crazy is going on…
The sidestand switch
wrapped around some kind of breather
and the glass tube is peeling off too.
Plus, to begin with
it wasn’t even hitting
the sidestand stopper.
The covering is peeling too… that’s dangerous
I removed it and disabled it
Remove one thing and all sorts of issues pop up on old bikes
Maybe that’s part of the charm.
This year for sure!
